Knees for Women
Women are an important group to consider in the treatment of knee osteoarthritis. Approximately 2 out of every 3 knee replacements performed in the US are performed on women. Academic studies have also shown that osteoarthritis of the knee is more prevalent in women than in men.
Despite the larger number of women suffering from osteoarthritis of the knee, for decades implants were developed based on knee models that did not look at the differences between men and women.
In recent years, knee implant manufacturers have started to focus on knees for women, or gender knees. Some manufacturers have focused on expanding the range of sizes available to address gender knee differences. Others have taken into account differences in both the size and shape of a “typical” female knee to create a gender-specific line of knee replacements.
The ConforMIS Approach
At ConforMIS we believe that taking account of the differences between patients is critical to a good result. While a gender based approach may address some of the average differences between a man and a woman, the reality is that an individual patient can differ from the “average” of either gender in ways big and small. Size, shape, and proportion are affected not just by gender but by ethnicity, size, genetics and lifestyle.
With our iFit “Image-to-Implant” technology, we create implants that are personalized to your unique size and shape using imaging data that comes directly from you. That way, we ensure that every implant is as unique as you are. |
