Dr. Snyder: I’ve been practicing orthopedics for over 30 years and I’ve had an orthopedic operation on my own knee, which was the lateral unicondylar replacement from ConforMIS. It’s allowed me to get my mobility back, which I had lost for about five years as I went through a series of arthroscopic knee surgeries and a meniscal allograft, all of which really didn’t hold up and eventually developed bone-on-bone changes, necessitating the iUni.
Why did you choose the ConforMIS iUni?
Dr. Snyder: When I was in need of surgery on myself, I started doing research on unicondylar replacements and found that really there was no company that made a specific lateral uni except ConforMIS. Up until that time, most lateral unis were designed as medical unis and somebody took a medial uni for a left knee and used it as a lateral uni on a right knee. And of course, with the ConforMIS experience, we know that everybody has a different shaped tibia. What’s designed for the medial side for one knee is not going to fit the way it should fit on the lateral side of another knee.
What was your experience post-surgery?
Dr. Snyder: Immediately the day after surgery when the physical therapist came into my room, I said to the therapist, “Look, I can already do a single deep knee bend on my right knee, which I could never do before the surgery.” And the therapist said to me, “We don’t need to do anything to you, you’re ready to go.” Now I walk and I’m pain-free. I play handball and I’m pain-free. I even run occasionally and jog on it and I’ve had no problems with it.
