Steven R. Nichols, M.D. was a founding partner of Alabama Sports Medicine & Orthopaedic Center and upon its dissolution became a founding member of Andrews Sports Medicine & Orthopaedic Center. His practice is concentrated on the surgical treatment of spinal disorders, including cervical, thoracic and lumbar disease. He treats complex spinal problems including disk disease, instability, issues related to arthritis, trauma, and tumors. He also performs revision procedures for failed back surgery.

A large part of his spine practice is devoted to the minimally invasive surgical treatment of spinal disorders. Dr. Nichols is experienced in minimally invasive lumbar fusion including XLIF and ILLIF. Appropriate surgical candidates can generally expect to experience a more rapid recovery compared to traditional fusion procedures.

In addition, he performs adult reconstructive surgery, particularly those related to knee and shoulder problems, including rotator cuff disease and arthritis, as well as sports-related injuries. He also treats work-related injuries.

An Alabama native, Dr. Nichols graduated from the University of Alabama, where he received degrees in biology and chemistry. He then earned his medical degree from the University of Alabama School of Medicine in Birmingham and completed an orthopaedic residency at the Orthopaedic Hospital of Charlotte and Charlotte Memorial Hospital and Medical Center, affiliated with the University of North Carolina.

Certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery in 1987, Dr. Nichols has maintained current recertification status. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and a member of the Clinical Orthopaedic Society and the North American Spine Society. Dr. Nichols and his wife, Lucy Ann, have four adult children, three grandsons and one granddaughter. He spends much of his free time with family activities. An avid outdoorsman, Dr. Nichols also enjoys hunting, fishing and wildlife management.
