Keeping Up with my Family
My name is Frank Coniglio and #thisismyknee
My wife Gail and I have lived in Palm Beach, Florida for the past 36 years. We both fell in love with the beach and are active members of our community. I am a semi-retired restaurateur and on Sundays, we bring our seven adult children and their families together for a home-cooked dinner. That means entertaining my 11 grandchildren, all under the age of ten! It can get hectic, but it’s so much fun trying to keep up with them and thanks to my new knee I can!
There is no better way to unwind than to hit the golf course with friends. We spend hours catching up, soaking up the sun, and trying to improve our game. But a few years ago, my game was thrown off by serious pain in my knee. The pain would distract me on the course. Getting around the sand traps became difficult, and digging myself out was nearly impossible. That is when I realized I had to do something.
I reached out to a friend who had a customized knee replacement by Conformis. He was very happy with the result and recommended I speak with Dr. Gregory Martin, an orthopedic surgeon at Preferred Orthopedics of the Palm Beaches in Boynton Beach. During my visit, Dr. Martin told me I needed a total replacement on my right knee. I was hesitant at first, but I continued to research my options and was encouraged by the ‘made for me’ Conformis design. I decided to go ahead with the surgery on October 28th, 2013.
My operation began at 8:00 a.m. and I was discharged the next day at 11:00 a.m. The nurses kept offering me heavy pain medication but I never needed it! When I returned home, I could slowly go up and down the stairs on my own. Fairly soon I was back to taking walks on the beach and felt steadier on the uneven ground.
It has been about three years since my surgery and I am back to enjoying long walks on the beach with my wife. The pain is no longer a distraction. When I get myself stuck in a sand trap now it’s no problem to jump in and out whereas before, it was very difficult and painful.
I tell everyone about my Conformis knee and many of my friends have since reached out to Dr. Martin about the customized options Conformis offers. They are very happy with their new knees and every one of my friends’ thanks me for the heads up.
What does the surgeon do in the OR during knee replacement surgery?
Surgeons are equipped with many tools during a Conformis knee replacement to ensure the best chance for a successful procedure. Before each case, the surgeon receives a pre-operative plan called an iView that is designed specifically for each case. This allows him or her to

“I would suggest to you that when a knee works, whether it’s custom-made or off-the-shelf, it’s awesome, it’s really awesome. And I have lots of off-the-shelf patients that do really well… I just achieve it more frequently, and more reproducibly with Conformis” Dr. José Rodriguez
