Dr. Freels grew up in the East Tennessee area. His undergraduate degree is from the University of the South in Sewanee, TN., and he attended medical school at the James H. Quillen College of Medicine at East Tennessee State University in Johnson City, TN. His general surgery internship was at Bowman Gray/Wake Forest University Baptist Hospital Medical Center in Winston-Salem, NC. He then completed his residency training in orthopaedic surgery at the Tampa General Hospital in Tampa, FL, and at Bowman Gray/Wake Forest University Baptist Hospital Medical Center. He later completed a fellowship at the Florida Orthopaedic Institute in Adult Reconstruction and Arthritis Surgery/Total Joint Replacement in Tampa, FL.

Dr. Freels has extensive experience in orthopedic surgery and joint replacement patients having been in practice for over 18 years. This includes both primary hip, knee, and shoulder replacement patients including minimally-invasive joint replacement surgeries such as the “Oxford” partial knee replacement and the direct anterior approach for hip replacement surgery. He also has experience in the more complex joint replacement patients including infections, peri-prosthetic fractures, and revision joint replacement surgery. In addition, he also has experience in arthroscopy surgery, trauma and fracture care, simple hand and upper extremity surgery, and seeing and treating sports medicine patients. He has served as a team physician for various high schools throughout his career.

In his spare time, Dr. Freels enjoys various sporting activities, fishing, and spending time with his family. He and his wife, Vicki, have been married for over 28 years and have 3 sons. The oldest son, Parker, is attending medical school at USC in Columbia, SC, the middle son, Graham, will be attending UNC-Wilmington, and the youngest son, Bradley, will be attending Appalachian State University in the fall of 2015.
