Prescribe Videos to Keep Your Patients on Track
Conformis and Vidscrip partner to increate patient engagement
We hear all the time that surgeons repeat themselves with patients over-and-over, day-after-day. They use the same analogies and word pictures, describe the same procedures, and educate patients on the same recovery requirements. However, studies show that patients forget much (up to 80%) of what they learn at the point-of-care.
So why does this matter?
Orthopedic surgeons are constantly being asked to do more with less. Bundled payment programs and other pressures on reimbursement, in addition to patient satisfaction and health outcomes – all require surgeons to address practice inefficiencies.
That’s why Conformis and Vidscrip have teamed up to tackle these issues head‑on with joint replacement practices. Vidscrip offers a video platform for surgeons to cover all of the questions patients need answered as they navigate their surgical journey. The Vidscrip software guides surgeons through the process of recording their own answers the questions. Once recorded, those answers can be automatically shared with patients at key moments across the episode-of-care.
In the pilot program we launched in November, 2017, 34 surgeons recorded their knee replacement modules which each include answers to 100 commonly asked questions about knee replacement surgery. The pilot has resulted in over 3,000 videos recorded, and 12,000 patient views.
Greg Martin, MD, a board certified orthopedic surgeon with advanced fellowship training in reconstructive surgery of the hip and knee from Harvard Medical School and one of the surgeons who participated in the pilot says: “Care providers are accustomed to conveying large amounts of information to patients which can be challenging for them and their families to absorb in the moment, and even harder to retain after the fact I have recorded Vidscrips to help my patients better understand my pre-operative plan, prepare for surgery, and manage their post-operative care. I am already seeing my patients coming into their first visit far more informed with Vidscrips provided by me and my staff.”
Conformis CEO Mark Augusti says: “We focus on delivering the most personalized experience possible for patients considering knee replacement and that’s one of the reasons why we are proud to partner with Vidscrip to help our surgeons and their practices increase quality time with their patients, improve outcomes, and address the overall efficiency of their practice”.
Now that we’ve completed the successful pilot, the opportunity for surgeons to create their own Vidscrip channel will be launched nationally during the 2018 American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons (AAOS) meeting in New Orleans in March. The Conformis AAOS exhibition booth will include a one-of-a-kind recording studio where surgeons can use their own device (computer, tablet, phone) to record answers for their patients. Conformis and Vidscrip teams will follow up with participating surgeons to help them successfully incorporate the program into their practice. The knee replacement program is exclusively sponsored by Conformis. We look forward to further adoption of this valuable program and welcome your questions or feedback!
