Anil Gambhir is a Consultant Hip and Knee Surgeon working at the Centre for Hip Surgery at Wrightington Hospital. He is Honorary Senior Lecturer at Edge Hill University and Treasurer to the British Hip Society.

Anil is fellowship trained in dealing with complex adult hip and knee problems including primary, revision and re-revision. Anil was appointed to Wrightington in 2003 and has developed a busy clinical practice. He currently performs over 200 primary hip replacements per year, 50 revision hips, 175 primary knees and 35 revision knees per year.

He gained his medical degree from the Victoria University of Manchester in 1991. He gained his Fellowship from the Royal College of Surgeons in 1995. He completed his higher surgical training in the North West gaining his FRCS (Orth) in 2002 and CCST in 2003.

During his training Anil undertook periods of specialist training in Denmark, Germany and India. He was awarded both EFORT and BOA travelling fellowships. As part of his training, he undertook the Harry Platt research fellowship where he spent a year investigating the use of additional antibiotics in acrylic bone cement. His final year of training was at Wrightington Hospital where ultimately, he was appointed as a Consultant.

Anil has undertaken training in the Direct Anterior Approach. He was trained in Atlanta, Germany and Belgium. Anil offers this minimally invasive hip technique in selected patients undergoing primary total hip replacement.

Anil is a key opinion leader and faculty on many national and international meetings. He regularly teaches and lectures at meetings across Asia and Europe. His areas of clinical interest include direct anterior hip replacement, bespoke (custom) hip and knee replacements, revision hip and knee replacement, deep infection and peri prosthetic fractures.

Anil has been involved in management both at his trust and nationally. He has been CD for trauma (2007-2009), CD for Lower Limb (2012-2014), Divisional Medical Director (2014-2018), Regional Clinical Co-ordinator National Joint Registry (dates).

He is currently Member of Knee Revision Working Group (2018-date) and is revision knee lead for the North West. He is a key member on the BHS executive and is Honorary Treasurer (2018 – date).
